I am a cognitive neuroscientist and registered clinical psychologist whose career bridges social work, clinical practice, and neuroscience research. Before entering academia, I worked in frontline services with individuals facing severe mental health challenges, addiction, and social exclusion—an experience that continues to shape my scientific perspective on human behaviour and social interaction.
My research focuses on the neural mechanisms that link perception, action, and emotion. I am particularly interested in how the facial sensorimotor system supports emotional communication, with research spanning sensorimotor neuroscience, social cognition, affective neuroscience, and non-invasive brain stimulation.
A major focus of my current work is ORIS (Orofacial Region as an Integrated System), a research programme investigating how facial movements are controlled through the integration of motor commands and somatosensory feedback. Rather than viewing facial expressions as the output of isolated muscles, ORIS aims to understand the face as an integrated biomechanical and neural system in which cutaneous mechanoreceptors, muscle activity, and motor control interact continuously. This work combines behavioural experiments, tactile mechanoreceptor stimulation, electromyography, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), computational modelling, and advanced facial motion tracking to develop a mechanistic account of facial motor control and emotion expression.
Alongside my experimental research, I develop open-source tools and experimental paradigms, primarily using PsychoPy, to facilitate reproducible behavioural and neuroscience research. I am committed to open science and believe that sharing methods, software, and data is essential for accelerating scientific progress through transparency and collaboration.
